Traveling Art Gallery (TAG)
TAG (Traveling Art Gallery) is a wonderful way to go into the classes (grades K-4) and get to know the students a little better while exposing them to different artists.
CLEARANCES ARE REQUIRED!
The presentations and the activity are completed for you. Each grade level has a theme, as to expose the students to different types of art and different cultures. We have aligned the Spanish, French and German with the new World Language Program that the district is rolling out this year. Here are our themes for each grade level:
K – Pittsburgh Area Artists
1 – Spanish
2 – Around the World
3 – French
4 – German
If you would like to volunteer please complete this form and select the grade(s) you’d like to volunteer for. You will be responsible for presenting 3-4 times the same artist, so as to cover each class within the grade level. Once all volunteers are found I’ll email them with a list of artist to choose from Mid-October. (Link to form: https://forms.gle/
Clearances are required, but no prior art experience is necessary
What is involved?
Each volunteer selects an artist and painting to present to a specific grade of students. Most TAG volunteers choose to present to the grade their child is in. The PTO will supply materials for volunteers to use in creating their presentations, but we also encourage you to do your own research. The younger grades especially enjoy doing hands-on activities related to the painting.
TAG presentations last about 20 minutes, but volunteers have a great amount of flexibility in how they present the material. Students seems to respond more to the presentations when they get to ask and answer questions, provide their own opinions and interpretation of the art, and work on a craft related to the artwork.
When is TAG?
There are three TAG weeks throughout the year. This year’s weeks are in November, February, and May. Volunteers should contact their assigned teacher directly to schedule a day and time during TAG week to give their class presentation
What artists are featured in TAG?
Students learn about a variety of artists encompassing many different time periods and styles of art. Some of these artists include Claude Monet, Frida Khalo, Leonardo da Vinci, and Romare Bearden. For a complete list of artists and paintings, click here.
How do I sign up?
If you would like to volunteer, please contact Windy Neff at windy.neff@gmail.com, and let her know which grade you are interested in volunteering in. She will let you know which paintings are available.
It’s important to know that no experience is necessary. You don’t need to be an art history major to volunteer! The presentations are very simple and are a fun way to engage with students during the school day.
