Celebrating Read Across America week with our 2024 Read-a-thon!
The read-a-thon will kick off after school on Friday, 3/1 and end when you head to bed on 3/10.
HOW IT WORKS: All outside of school reading counts! (This makes it easier for parents/guardians to help track). Paper trackers will be sent home & those can be sent back in at the end of the time OR you can enter reading minutes online here.
Kiddos can participate without fundraising. Fundraisers do allow the PTO to sponsor all that they do though! Kiddos can get family & friends to “sponsor” their reading. Reading sponsors can donate online here (just send them that link with your kiddo’s grade/teacher name). At the end of the read-a-thon, you can also send in any checks (made out to the PTO) or cash–make sure they are in an envelope that clearly has “Read-a-thon” along with the student’s name and teacher’s name.
Our goal is to inspire a love of reading and help form some reading habits with a fun competition. We will have some fun prizes as well! Participants can earn prizes for reading and/or fundraising.
Tips:
Kiddos can read themselves or actively listen while being read to (in person or virtually).
- Have a grandparent (or other family member) read a book over zoom/skype to your child.
- Find you tube videos of authors and librarians reading books. (Sharpsburg Library offers several… check them out on you tube)

ENTER READING MINUTES HERE
This form is where you enter your minutes for the week. You can also submit your fundraised money on this form.
Fundraising
Students can participate in the Read-a-thon without fundraising. Getting reading sponsors is a fun way to get others cheering your reading along and support your school.
This year we are encouraging everyone to pay online at here. Cash or Check (made out to the KerrPTO) can be sent into school with your kiddo (labeled for the Kerr PTO)–please include everything in one envelope and make sure your child’s name & teacher is also indicated.
Students should seek sponsors at the discretion of their parents/guardians. Families: Consider e-mails or phone calls to potential sponsors (see the info below to cut & paste onto facebook or in email).
Script for recruiting sponsors, copy, paste, and fill in the blanks:
Sponsor Script: Hello! I am participating in a read-a-thon with my school, Kerr Elementary. Would you like to sponsor me? You can help my school and encourage me to read at the same time! I have 10 days to read as much as I can. I think I will read about ____ minutes per day. Over 10 days, that means I think I will read about _______ minutes. You can pledge an amount per minute read, or a flat rate. You can donate a flat amount now, or I can collect your pledge when the read-a-thon ends (at the beginning of March). You can write a check made out to the KerrPTO, donate cash, or pay online KerrPTO.org/ReadingSponsor (if you pay online, you need to know I’m in ___ grade & my teacher is _____.)
Thank you for your support!
Thank You for our Prize Sponsors
The PTO is providing prizes but we also have some pretty great community businesses.
Some bigger prizes kiddos can earn entries to for every 20 minutes read and every $20 fundraised.
Thank you to our sponsors:
